A couple of years ago, 3D video was riding a wave of popularity fueled by “Avatar” and several other notable films that demonstrated the technology's potential. Now after enduring a series of flops, Hollywood isn’t so over-the-top in its promotion of 3D. But studios are still producing 3D content, despite the damage caused by Hollywood before a majority of consumers were able to experience 3D in a proper setting. In many respects, the consumer electronics industry has been left to pick up the pieces after collectively making a sizable investment…

Throughout the commercial and residential A/V industries, if there's one common thread that electronics professionals share, it is a disdain for the HDMI format. The Bromfield, Colo.-based manufacturer AVocation Systems can't do anything about the market perception of HDMI, but it can provide its authorized dealer base with a new range of solutions that can ease the pain of working with the HDMI protocol. AVocation Systems' new Mountain Series 8x8 HDMI Matrix Switch (HX-0808H) is the first of several new products the company plans on releasing on in 2012. AVocation…

Arlen Schweiger | 05/01 07:30 AM,

If you look at the History page in the About Us section on specialty retailer Bjorn's Audio Video's website, you'll notice that a timeline of milestones corresponds very well with impact technology in consumer electronics over the last 35-plus years. The San Antonio, Texas-based company, whose first store opened in 1975, has been ahead of the curve in guiding customers over that time span, which is why founder Bjorn Dybdahl has been selected as part of the Consumer Electronics Association's 2012 CE Hall of Fame class. The CEA will induct…

ATEN VS482 Dual View HDMI switch
Robert Archer | 03/26 06:16 AM,
A couple of years ago when the 3D video format was making its reemergence into the world of consumer video the products that supported the format were expensive. Since that time the buzz for the format has leveled off and like most things in consumer electronics, it's growth has pushed 3D gear price points down to levels that allow more consumers to buy into the world of 3D video. ATEN's new VS482 Dual View HDMI switch provides electronics professionals with a device that can handle as many as four 3D…

White House Home Theater: A Look Inside
Grant Clauser | 02/27 08:48 AM,

I’m sure being president is a hard job, so Barack Obama needs to unwind in the evening too. Lucky for him, the job comes with a home theater, and has for many decades. Several sources note that while the first movie was shown in the White House in 1915, the theater wasn’t actually built until 1942. President Dwight Eisenhower is said to have watched over 200 movies in the room. President Ronald Reagan’s favorite movie for the room was The Sound of Music. According to Tevi Troy, former Deputy Secretary…

No 3D Super Bowl Again: 4 Reasons Why
Jason Knott | 02/02 09:46 AM,
22 Comments
2012 could someday be remembered as a year of tremendous technological advancements. Today, it's just another year gone by without the Super Bowl in 3D. How can the world's biggest television event not be a showcase for 3D, which is still trying to gain acceptance among the public? Here is my analysis. Broadcasters have given up on 3D: Fox, NBC, CBS and even Disney-owned ABC and ESPN have concluded that 3D is for watching Blu-ray movies in home theaters, not television programming. No demand for 3D: There isn't even an…
