Movie Servers at ISE 2012: Europeans Unfazed by Kaleidescape Ruling

At Integrated Systems Europe, Kaleidescapewas all prepared to address questions about the recent tentative ruling in its lawsuit with the DVD CCA – a decision against Kaleidescape that came down shortly before the show. “But it didn’t really come up,” says senior marketing director Tom Barnett during the show. Dealers and distributors interviewed by CE Pro during ISE either didn't know about the recent ruling or simply didn't care. At ISE 2012, the manufacturer of media servers showed a new Blu-ray disc carousel, the DV700 ($5,495), that does not include…

Kaleidescape, DVD CCA Back in Court Over Movie Servers
Julie Jacobson | 11/30 09:49 AM,

Do Kaleidescape’s high-end media servers violate a licensing agreement with the DVD Copy Control Association (DVD CCA)? After 7 years, the question is still up in the air but the two parties are back in court as of Nov. 14, 2011, this time to address the actual merits of the case for the first time. “Things have been proceeding slowly, as they’re known to do,” Kaleidescape marketing director Tom Barnett tells CE Pro. This could well be the definitive case for the two parties, which have met in court several…

Kaleidescape 300-Disc Vault ‘No More than $6,000’
Julie Jacobson | 07/29 11:02 AM,

Kaleidescape, developer of high-end media servers, will offer two Blu-ray storage solutions that could keep the the DRM police at bay. The new Vault product line will complement the recently released M300 and M500 players for playing Blu-ray discs that are stored on a networked Kaleidescape server. The problem with these DRM-friendly players today is that, in order to play a Blu-ray movie, the physical disc must be present in the tray (of any M500 on the network; the M300 has no disc tray). The Vault is supposed to solve…

Imerge Closes Media Server Business

The headlines are getting old: Media Server Business Closes Doors. The latest casualty is Imerge, the UK-based manufacturer whose Xiva platform was once the darling of third-party server vendors. Imerge was one of the most established developers of music servers, particularly in Europe, offering the popular audio-only SoundServer since since the early 2000s. The company added DVD management capabilities by 2008. Imerge CEO Cameron Wade said in a letter to customers and partners, “It is with great regret that I must inform you today that, effective immediately, Imerge Ltd. is…

Imerge Mulls Future
Julie Jacobson | 05/12 08:43 AM,

Another media server company is in limbo, following a spate of manufacturers who have exited the category, including Escient, Sunfire, Xperinet, Colorado vNet. Imerge, which is owned by Nortek, announced today that it is “exploring avenues for continued success.” We spoke with Imerge sales and marketing manager Dan Benjamin yesterday. He alerted us to news that would be released today, hoping to quell any rumors in advance. The problem is, he didn’t quell any rumors and the announcement doesn’t say anything that could remotely be construed as positive. The PR…

Musings on Kaleidescape, CEA, Media Servers
Julie Jacobson | 05/12 07:58 AM,

My, my, a lot of negative comments on the “big” news that Kaleidescape is adding Blu-ray support to its movie servers … with the caveat that the disc must be in the tray in order to play it. OK, so it’s not ideal. You think Kaleidescape is happy about it? The really big news in the announcement is that Kaleidescape does in fact have a road map. What is the most worrisome thing about a Kaleidescape system? That the courts will rule its DVD servers illegal and the company will…

Kaleidescape Brings DRM to Blu-ray Copying
Julie Jacobson | 05/11 05:37 AM,

For seven years, dealers have recognized Kaleidescape as having the most reliable multiroom movie server in the business. But they’ve been twiddling their thumbs while the manufacturer developed a solution for Blu-ray storage. Integrators and their wealthy clients will finally get what they wished for … sort of. Two new M-Class players (M500, M300), which will ship May 18, will let users add Blu-ray discs to a Kaleidescape movie library and play them throughout the house – with one major caveat: The physical disc must be in the DVD tray.…

vNet Drops Media Server: The End of an Era?
Julie Jacobson | 04/30 07:02 AM,

Add Colorado vNet to a long list of companies that has dropped its movie server, following Escient, Sunfire, Xperinet and Axonix (which morphed into Mozaex). “We know some dealers really liked the piece but we needed to step back, see what products made the most sense right now and in the next few years,” says Petro Shimonishi, the head of sales and marketing for vNet. vNet launched the Vibe Video Players (VS1 Series) in 2008. Starting at $4,000 the player was on the lower end of the price scale for…
