If you’re not sold on powerline and RF for wire-free audio/video, then you might take another look at the lowly coax cable. The Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) has announced the next-generation 2.0 specification, featuring two performance modes with minimum throughputs of 400 and 800 Mbps (700 Mbps and 1.4 Gbps PHY rates). Founded in 2004 by Comcast, EchoStar, Panasonic, Motorola, Toshiba and others, MoCA was established at a time when little else existed for high-throughput distribution with quality of service (QoS). At the time, MoCA was working towards a… View this story

One of the biggest hurdles manufacturers and installers face when dealing with retrofit installations is signal transmission. This affects everything from computer networking and multiroom audio systems, to solutions as mainstream as home theaters. Focus Enhancements, an Oregon-based semiconductor company, is targeting the retrofit market with the impending release of its Summit Wireless solution. Anchored by its FS848 chip, the Summit Wireless solution offers easy setup, 7.1 channels of audio, sweet spot calibration and reliable performance, according to the company. The chip took more than two years to develop and… View this story

Leslie Chard, former president of HDMI Licensing, told CE Pro in 2008, “There is no such thing” as “wireless HDMI.” More than two years and plenty of products later, the answer is still the same, but the messenger has changed. “HDMI is a wired play,” Chard’s successor Steve Venuti tells CE Pro. “That’s it. There is no wireless play. It [HDMI Licensing] sees wire as always delivering the highest bandwidth and the highest quality.” That’s especially true given the increasing bandwidth requirements of new technologies such as 3D, 4k x… View this story

I was in the middle of catching up with season 5 of "Lost" when I got an Iogear Wireless Audio/Video kit to review. Talk about perfect timing. The kit is designed to let people wirelessly connect their PC (fully compatible with Windows XP and Vista) to their TV to stream audio and video up to 720p HD. Long story short: It was easy to set up, "Lost" episodes on ABC.com looked great, and my iTunes library sounded good through my NAD receiver and Energy speakers. Setup is Easy Setup took… View this story

Not sure if a home's AC wiring is fit for powerline-based audio? NuVo Technologies takes the guesswork out of the equation with the new Site Analysis Tool, a companion to the company's Renovia system, which uses the home's existing powerlines (via HomePlug) to deliver multiroom audio.. "The key is giving confidence and assurance to installers that the product [Renovia] is going to be right for the installation," says NuVo president David Rodarte. "One of the things we found is that installers are asking: Is this X10? The new tool will… View this story

At last, at last, wireless HD is now shipping from Gefen. The company is now selling its "Wireless for HDMI" transmitter and receiver for $999 retail. The solution is based on technology from Tzero, which uses Ultra Wideband (UWB) as its basis. Wireless HD products – promised for two years from a variety of vendors – has been plagued with delays due to the cost of technology and technical challenges. But I surmised in my 2009 "6 Trends" story that this would be the year of wireless HD. Indeed, it's… View this story

Channel Vision has dropped its plans create a HomePlug powerline-based audio system, and instead is going with wireless. At CES 2009, the company is demonstrating 2.4-Ghz transceivers with eight selectable channels. Channel Vision claims the products transmit "crystal clear" sound over 300 feet. Two models will be offered: one for stereo sound, and another for whole-house audio. The company claims that multizone synchronization is not an issue. "Latency is ridiculously low, under 2 milliseconds," says Channel Vision's Jack Urrutia. The products include both line level and speaker level ports. "The… View this story
